We Need to Finish the Job on Term Limits

Here is an opinion piece I authored for the New York Daily News on the term limits question on this year's ballot. After spending six months as a member of the 2010 Charter Revision Commission, I remain convinced that we did not go far enough on the issue of term limits. We need to eliminate the exemption for incumbent city elected officials. Despite that reservation, I hope voters will vote yes on Question 1 of the ballot -- its a good start.

  1. The latest NY Times/CBS News poll shows that a majority of voters say their own elected representatives do not deserve to return to office. (about 6 in 10 voters say it is time to give someone new a chance to represent them).

I certainly agree with the majority public sentiment. So it would be downright delicious if the local electorate voted AGAINST the stale incumbents (or virtual incumbents) in E.D.S. 64, 67, 69, 74, 76, 83, 87 & 88 this Nov. 2nd.

SO IF YOU LIVE IN THE 81st ASSEMBLY DISTRICT, PLEASE VOTE FOR THE FOLLOWING:

    FOR COMPTROLLER - Harry Wilson

FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL - Dan Donovan

FOR U.S. SENATORS - Jay Townsend & Joseph DioGuardi

FOR REPRESENTATIVE IN CONGRESS - Anthony Mele

FOR STATE SENATOR - Stylo Sapaskis

FOR MEMBER OF ASSEMBLY - Joseph McLaughlin

FOR JUDGE OF THE CIVIL COURT - Daniel Szalkiewicz

  4. Yesterday, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz was on Johnson Ave. and West 235th St. handing out a long instruction sheet on how he would like us to vote.

It said that we should vote AGAINST term limits. Hah, hah! What makes me think that Assemblyman Dinowitz is totally out of touch with the voters on this ballot question? Let's see how Riverdale and the rest of the city votes on term limits. I bet that Assemblyman Dinowitz will on the losing side!

  5. Losing side? I believe that holding any elected office in the Bronx means that you are already on life's losing side.
