Guy Velella Dies At 66

Celeste Katz of the Daily News reports that former State Senator Guy Velella has died at 66. Velella had lung cancer and had recently told friends that he had 3-6 months to live. Velella was a complicated figure since he was immensely popular in his district and powerful in Albany, but he resigned in disgrace after pleading guilty to bribery charges.

RIP Senator Velella. He had one vision that he funded and it was good for our borough, he began the fireworks display for Fourth of July at Orchard Beach. We are deserving of this visual treat. It could have become a destination and a great Bronx event for years to come. Having had Bronxites celebrating their patriotism on our beach would make a better clip than the one American Idol utilized. Too bad not one of our current elected officials have this foresight. Look at how we are presented to the nation with the one white guy humping the isle seat.

  2. Fireworks as a legacy? I cannot think of anything more ephemeral.
