BP Diaz Fundraising During Disaster?

After a couple of days of no power and cabin fever, I contacted some friends who where similarly situated and went over to the Bronx Ale House for a change of scenery and a good burger. We had a hard time getting a table because there was an event going on. I was shocked to see that it was a political event for Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz. In the middle of a disaster where so many Bronxites and New Yorkers are without power, gas for their cars and heat, it was surreal to walk into the middle of a bunch of fat cats in suits attending a political event. As I sat with friends who had not been able to work or take a shower all week, I thought how out of touch and selfish some politicians really are.

  1. Just disgusting … from a moral standpoint, from a political standpoint, and certainly from a public-relations standpoint. Once again, Rubén Díaz, Jr. shows what he’s really made of. It's all so sad and embarassing for our borough that this kind of man is Bronx Borough President.

    1. I don't know if he's a bad person, but his timing is very insensitive. This kind of thing is not appropriate behavior from a politician representing a storm-damaged area.

  2. Once again Diaz has shown us how low class he is. He should have cancelled his event and been handing out food and water to Bronxites who are stranded in their homes without power and no gas to get anywhere. But what can you expect from a street kid from the hood?

  7. Bx Boro Prez Ruben Diaz Junior is
    (a) very stupid
    (b) very desperate for political contributions
    (c) both of the above

  8. NYC public officials should focus on STORM RELIEF, NOT FUNDRAISING. Instead of attending a celebration about himself, the Bronx BP needs to focus the urgent task of helping Bronxites recover from this disaster.”

  9. Hey everybody! The big TV networks are planing star-studded fundraisers for local hurricane victims while Ruben Diaz Jr. is having a fundraiser for HIMSELF.

  14. Do we elect public servants or just party/fund-raiser people? That is the real question.

Also, what is a borough president anyway?

  15. He speaks and all I hear is gobbledygook.

  16. I think many readers are being way too judgemental here.

  17. Ok...not being judgmental...has he explained why he was having a fundraiser while people were still suffering from Sandy? Did he donate the funds? We should be able to look at his campaign disclosure forms after January 15, 2013 to see if the funds were for himself...if so..then is it okay to be judgmental?

    1. So who are YOU to judge him, the President of a borough? He should only be judged by his peers.
