Bronx Freshman Assemblyman Tops Per Diem List

This article reports that freshman Assemblyman Eric A. Stevenson (who represents the Morrisania & East Tremont sections in the Bronx) was at the top of the list in terms of the amount of money he was reimbursed for meals and travel to Albany. Assemblyman Stevenson was reimbursed a total of $26,468 this year. Overall, lawmakers received nearly $3 million in reimbursements, with most averaging about $13,000.

  1. Until now, the only thing I knew about Assemblyman Stevenson is that he recently joined State Senator Bill Perkins at a rally in Harlem to support the hotel maid who is the accuser in the sexual assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

So now Mr. Stevenson is following in the tradition former State Senator Efrain González Jr., who used to hold the the record for per diem expenses.

  2. I remember Eric Stevenson from when he first ran for that seat about a decade ago against Assemblywoman Gloria Davis.

  3. He's from a Bx polical family: Daddy was a Dem District Leader + Commissioner on Board of Elections & Grandpapa was an Assemblyman
    during late 1960s

  4. In 1970, Stevenson's grandfather lost the 78th district assembly seat to Louis Nine.

  5. Wow . . . That's interesting. I never realized how much it costs the taxpayers each year to cover work-related expenses for state lawmakers.

  7. Ahh, Gloria Davis and the sweet smell of corruption.

She was in the State Assembly for 22 years (and even became Majority Whip) followed by some good old fashioned jail time when she resigned in 2003 after pleading guilty to bribery charges.

  8. It was Assemblyman Louis Nine who held the hearings in the late 1970's that got the airlines to reduce the extremely expensive airfares to Puerto Rico.

From Aguada to Yabucoa and San Juan to Peñuelas, Puerto Ricans owe Louis Nine many, many thanks.

  10. I am surprised Azi Paybarah has not written about the reimbursements in Albany.

  13. I wonder which member of the New York State Legislature is the worst value for the money?

  14. It's like our state is running on empty while politicians like Stevenson are running up their per diems. Go figure.
