Engel Talks Tough on Budget

Here is Congressman Eliot Engel talking tough to Nancy Pelosi regarding the proposed budget deal that could cost NY a billion dollars in Medicare funds. Engel is quoted in the Daily News as saying, "We served notice on Pelosi that we are not going to support this," Engel said. "This would mean tremendous cuts in health care services in New York and massive losses of jobs . . . I'm determined to beat it back." Tough words from a guy primarily known for getting to the State of the Union address hours early to snag an aisle seat.

  1. Each year, this fellow waited all day by the aisle just to shake the hand of George W. Bush, so go figure.

  2. So you (repeatedly, tirelessly, boringly) bash Diaz Jr. for whatever his role was in helping to put the brakes on spending $200-300 million taxpayer dollars to create 1500 dead-end minimum wage jobs and inundate an impoverished and polluted neighborhood with lots more car and truck traffic....

Now you bash Engel for trying to prevent what would be an economic gut punch to the borough, a direct assault on the industry that is far and away the borough's biggest provider of quality jobs; jobs that provide good salaries, jobs that provide health insurance, jobs that provide stability,....

The simplest explanation is that you're running as a Republican next time around.

  3. Well, I think that Bronx Political Chatter is an excellent, timely and highly informative little blog.

  4. NY needs to get its act together to curb medicare costs, maybe this would force some state politicians to make hard choices.

As for the Armory, its critical you factor in all the union labor involved its in construction, the taxes generated by sales in NYC that would otherwise go to Westchester coffers and of course the cost to maintain that white elephant, which are only going to increase at it continues to deteriorate in NYC hands since there is no money for its upkeep - see the recent article on the Orchard Beach bathhouse.

  5. There is no question that Engel is a lightweight in Washington. He is a laughingstock, known only for shaking the president's hand at each state-of-the-union address. And that's the problem. You may agree with him but most Washington pols don't care what he says and that doesn't help the Bronx.

BTW he and his family don't even live in NY State, so how can he really know what our problems are?

    He should be voted out.

  6. Maybe Engel wants to talk about illegal apartments in the Bronx, like the one he and his partner own?

  7. British Airways just reduced business airfares to London. Perhaps Engel can go on some meaningless junket to the UK!

  8. Err, This is a story? Whatever happened to the concept of providing us with news?

  9. Did you ever really listen to Congressman Engel?

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

I'd rather watch an old video of President Ford's appearance before the House Subcommittee on Criminal Justice to answer questions about his pardon of former President Nixon.
