Bronx Political Chatter is a no holds-barred, irreverent look at politics in the Bronx. Bronxites have long lacked an independent forum to express our views about local politics and politicians. Bronx Political Chatter is a place for you to openly express your views, ideas, criticisms and suggestions, and to make our elected officials more accountable for the decisions they make. So this is your turn to be heard.

Republicans to Control State Senate
Liz Benjamin over at Capital Tonight reports on a ruling by a Nassau judge on a close State Senate race that will now hand control of the Senate over to the Republicans as many expected. This seat gives the Republicans 32 votes, a small majority but enough to control the patronage and budget issues. The Democrats may challenge this ruling, but it is being reported that they are $2.4 million in debt. So it looks like the Dems may lose the Senate after just two years -- and they did such a fine job!

i used to think that the state republicans were bad, but the recent state democratic record of control makes the the republicans look like saints
ReplyDeleteThere is plenty of room for criticizing some the leadership of the NYS Senate Dems -- but the real reason they don't have a majority falls on two candidates who were likely to win on Long Island in races that would have meant pick-ups for the Dems. Calcaterra was knocked off the ballot because of overly restrictive residency requirements (her fault for not realizing it earlier on!) and David Mejias in turning into a starker overnight. I also blame Kaplowitz for running a really bad campaign in Rockland and running away from progressive support. Likewise Craig Johnson on Long Island (if he ends up losing) turned to the center-right in his campaign. The progressive folks who helped get him elected sat it out because he abandoned them as a legislator.
ReplyDeleteAll that being said -- I hope progressive reformers (Liz Krueger, for example) gain some power these next two years in the Democratic conference. I think she will find some new allies in folks like Avella, Carclucci and the Bronx's own Gustavo Rivera.
So the Democrats took control of the New York State Senate for the first time in more than four decades in the 2008 election, promising that things were going to change for the better now that the GOP had lost control. Boy were they wrong.
ReplyDeleteThe Democrats proved themselves to be an even more hideous bunch than the Republicans ... a feat that I never imagined possible. Their record is a masterstroke of failure. Shame on them!
And who is among the leaders of this bunch? Jeff Klein!
ReplyDeleteTony, I'm glad you're here to expose guys like Klein and his Senate Dem counterparts for what they are!
