Here is a posting by Bronx News Network about State Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr. blasting Mayor Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Quinn over their support for gay marriage as opposed to spending more time supporting extending the rent regs. But, BNN points out that last year Diaz supported a rent freeze bill by former State Senator Espada that some say would have hurt tenants rights.
Pay no attention to the ways that Diaz Sr. tries to confuse the issue. Each week, there is more and more evidence that acceptance of marriage equality is growing and that there are people — particularly straight people — willing to fight for same-sex marriage.
ReplyDeleteRuben Diaz, Sr. is horrid and his viewpoints are terrible. And thanks for making things even worse by including his pal Espada in the photo.
ReplyDeleteNY Governor Andrew Cuomo is focusing his effort on turning some key votes in the state Senate, which the Republicans control by a razor-thin 32-30 margin.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that Mr. Cuomo is being assisted in his campaign from former Republican and now liberal Independent NY City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who is doing his own pressuring of some vulnerable GOP state Senators to support the gay marriage bill.
Today in Albany, opponents of the gay-marriage bill rallied outside the Capitol and pledged to be heard on the issue. The pressure is mainly in the state Senate, where the GOP holds a 32-30 seat majority and so far no Republican has expressed support for the bill.
ReplyDeleteGenerally, if it comes out of Diaz Sr.'s mouth...it ain't true.

I like what Bloomberg said on Thursday when he urged the state lawmakers to vote in support of gay marriage before their legislative session ends next month.
ReplyDeleteHe said: "Do you want to be remembered as a leader on civil rights? Or an obstructionist? ... On matters of freedom and equality, history has not remembered obstructionists kindly. Not on abolition. Not on abortion. Not on women's suffrage. Not on workers' rights. Not on civil rights. And it will be no different on marriage rights."
I see that Michael Bloomberg's own stance on the issue has evolved over the years. Bravo!

ReplyDeleteSo I figured it out .... Only 2 Bronx pols get regular citywide press coverage these days: James Vacca (good things) and Ruben Diaz Sr. (bad things)
ReplyDeleteI read today that the UFT [United Federation of Teachers] is joining a number of unions in support of legalizing gay marriage in New York.
ReplyDeleteWake up . . . the Religious Right wants to change the way we live in the Bronx!
ReplyDeleteThey made a really cute couple.
ReplyDeleteThey say that the U.S. Postal Service is nearing collapse, but nobody seems to give a damn!
ReplyDeleteAs of 10:10 am on June 15, the gay-marriage bill is ONE VOTE SHY of clearing the State Senate.
