Diaz, Jr. Pushes Living Wage

Juan Gonzalez of the Daily News reports on a rally held for the living wage bill in the City Council, where Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. spoke forcefully in favor of the bill. Mr. Gonzalez reported that the BP was sticking up for the "other New York" and connected the bill to the Occupy Wall Street protests. The bill would require "any company seeking more than $1 million in tax exemptions or other forms of public assistance for a development project must agree to pay workers on that project at least $10 an hour. That's $2.75 more than the state's $7.25 minimum wage. " It has been opposed by Mayor Bloomberg, and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has not supported it in the past but said she was mulling it.

  2. Get rid of all the assistants in your office and use that money to give jobs to people who need an income. The Bronx is tired of the same fake leadership. You guys sleep well, we the other Bronx sleep cold and hungry.

  5. A candidate needs money and more than 5% of the registered voters to vote in order to beat any incumbent in the Bronx....the first is possible...the second is shamefully almost impossible.

  6. So true Mr. Padilla.
Maybe the Board of Election can run a social security numbers search and eliminate the district jumpers that duplicate votes. That ought to shave off two percent of the committed 5%.
But the real solution, is non-partisan elections, with a simple fee to ballot access. It is too difficult for any outsider to last until the Primary, never mind the money it costs to defend your petitions against Mr.Slime and the prepaid election lawyers. Schlein is giving testimony at Seabrook's trail but was never questioned about which non-profit paid him.

  7. The Living Wage Act would only apply to entities who enjoy over $1,000,000 a year in tax subsidies. Do the math...a "small business" would need over 200 employees currently earning minimum wage for the new law to start breaking into the they money saved from tax subsidies. 200 employees isn't exactly the mom and pop corner store.

Let's consider a more likely situation...a small business that employs 25 minimum wage workers. $7.25 per hour, moving to $11.25per hour. $3 extra per hour, 35 hours, 25 employees, 12 months a year = approximately $126,000.

$1,000,000 - $126,000 = $874,000 still left over from the tax subsidies and perks.

The Living Wage Act is the right thing to do. Most of the business owners who will be impacted don't even live in NYC and no longer pay a commuter tax. They want to keep their NYC businesses and their tax breaks, they need to pay a living wage.

I applaud the Catholic Church for coming out in support of this legislation. All Catholic legislators should do the right thing and support the NYC Living Wage Act.

  8. Mr. Giuffre,
You demonstrate that you are a salaried worker, and unaware of the cost of entrepreneurship. To Net CLEAN $126,000 you have to earn a conservative gross of $500,000..........never mind the pending Obama health care mandates per employee. You have to understand the cost of producing a dollar.

  10. Another way to earn over $100,000 is join Mr Borough President Diaz's staff. He pretends to care for the low income folk. His top staff earnings will feed a few hundred low income families.

  15. Instead of just complaining endlessly about what's wrong with our local elected officials, Bronxites should should go out and do something about it!

Let's face it, the stupidity and laziness of Bronxites has everything to do with the lousy and worthless local politicians who represent them.

If you don't VOTE in any meaningful numbers, then you don't have anybody else to blame but yourselves when you end up with swindlers and half-wits as your representatives. So, people of the Bronx, put up or shut up.

  16. Today, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund said that the world is at risk of sliding into a 1930s-style slump.

And what are our local politicians doing? They are pushing for a so-called liviing wage and killing job-producing projects like the Kingsbridge Armory Mall for the sake of playing up to a bunch of labor unions. OMG!
