Where is Marble Hill?

Here is an interesting piece in City Hall News about the interesting political status that Marble Hill enjoys (or suffers under). As the article explains, parts of Marble Hill are in Manhattan and parts are in the Bronx. In addition, it intersects multiple Council and Assembly districts. All together, Marble Hill is represented in the Assemblyman by Jeff Dinowitz, Jose Rivera and Guillermo Linares. In the City Council it parts are represented by Oliver Koppell, Fernando Cabrera, and Ydanis Rodriquez. Given that most of it is officially in Manhattan, their Borough President is Scott Stringer. Now that is a crazy mess.

  1. I'd say "suffering" is the right word when you look at the list of politicians who represent Marble Hill.

  2. Forget about Marble Hill!

I hope you all got to read the great letter in last week’s Riverdale Press in which Bronx community activist Cliff Stantion rips Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz a new asshole.

    Here’s the link:

  3. Mr Stanton speaks the truth. Nothing productive has come out of the Ben Franklin Club in over a decade. Dinowitz and Foell are content with captaining a sinking ship. Thanks goodness their are people like Stanton willing to call them out on it and kudos to the Press for providing him an outlet to do so.

  4. Well by the looks of it I for one can not wait for Mr. Stanton to announce that he is running against Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz next year.

I ran against Assemblyman Dinowitz, does Mr. Stanton have the fortitude to run against him, or is Mr. Stanton all talk.

  5. wow ... stanton wrote an an amazing letter

  6. Cliff Stanton's gutsy and hard-hitting letter is right to rebuke Assembly Member Dinowitz on all levels. Bravo!

  7. Ahh, scheming and frustrated Jeffrey Dinowitz.

The 56-year-old Dinowitz has been in the New York State Assembly for nearly 18 years, and what does he have to show for it? He chairs the Assembly's committee on consumer protection, which is the legislative equivalent of being put at the little kids' table to eat.

To put things into perspective, Dinowitz's counterpart in the New York State Senate is Lee Zeldin, who chairs that body's consumer protection committee. Senator Zeldin is 31 years old and was elected to the State Senate in 2010 (Yes, you read that right: He was elected LAST YEAR).

  8. Last I checked, the community board doesn't support the plaza, they support the greenstreet. Bad timing, Cliff, now find a new location and move on and stop whining about it.
Sidebar--Here's a good contest: Who whines more? Cliff about Dinowitz, or Dinowitz about the weather?
    And we're back...
Also last I checked, the people in my building right next to those PARKING spaces don't want it. We have an area to hang out, and we don't want college kids in front of our building at 3 am.
And I remember speaking with Johnson Ave owners around that time, and most of them didn't want to shut down their street. It wasn't the Review that made it happen, I don't think they have the power you credit them with. Look at the "arts fair" earlier this year on Riv Ave, I know it was raining, but even if it wasn't, it was miserable, so don't waste your time two blocks away. Again, stop whining about it and move on. All this stuff you talk about would be more accepted and more needed on the other side of Broadway. Try classing up Kingsbridge.
Maybe the Riverdale Press should start fact checking and editing their letters again. I know they used to back when it was a real paper.

  9. Maybe Jeff Dinowitz’s approach is to be low-key, nonaggressive and not make waves so things go smoothly. Unlike some other assembly members, at least he chairs a committee.

  10. Among other things, Mr. Stanton’s letter states that Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz is

    (1) an obstructionist
    (2) a selective listener
    (3) an impediment to progress
    (4) a politician who lacks vision

Sadly for our community, all of these criticisms are true.

  11. In a dysfunctional, highly partisan body with a history of corruption and a bent toward special interests we don't need low-key, non aggressive legislator who is not interested in making waves and is more interested in or seeing things go smoothly. We elect him to do more than attend community board meetings.

  12. Hey Anonymous @ Sep 22, 2011 8:24 AM, I prefer an elected representative who aims high!

In my opinion, Mr. Dinowitz stands for nothing but himself, and even his few claimed accomplishments actually owe little or nothing to him.

  13. Anonymous September 22, 2011 8:24 AM seems prefer legislators who are petty, weak, ineffective and hamstrung.

If you like that pathetic combination, then Jeffrey Dinowitz is certainly the assemblyman for you!

  14. I just heard an embarrassing Assemblyman Dinowitz story that gave parents at Public School 24 a real hoot:

At last Wednesday’s general meeting of the P.S. 24 Parents’ Association, after Jeffrey Dinowitz made his typically tedious and self-congratulatory remarks, he was mistakenly addressed by the presiding officer as “Oliver Koppell.”

As a politician, you’ve gotta be scraping rock bottom when you’re addressing a local audience whose members don’t even know who you are.

It’s one thing to be bedeviled by anonymity in Albany, but it at home too?

  15. The first rule of small-town politics is "Don't make enemies." Well if you look at the enemies list for Assemblyman Jeffrey E. Dinowitz, you will see that Ms. Colleen Hanley and her comrades at Amalgamated Houses are near the top of that list. It's nice to see that other upstanding local activists like Clifford Stanton are also on that list.

  16. The politicians you mentioned are a rusty, mediocre crew. Change would be nice!

  17. I heard Jeffrey Dinowitz speak at a public meeting once ... it was agonizing.

  18. All you naysayers should really keep quiet.. These are the officials that the voters picked on election dday. Thats how democracy works. If you dont like them, vote them out of office. Meanwhile just shut up because you have no right to speak they way you do!!!

  19. To Anonymous @ September 25, 2011 2:02 PM: This is still the US of A, and we have the absolute right of expressing our opinions about the performance of our elected officials.

If you don't like it, maybe you should move to Saudi Arabia or some other repressive hellhole.

  20. If I were the officer at 24, I'd be the embarrassed one, not knowing who my elected officials are.
And this is the US of A, so I say give the newspapers the same chance to express their opinions about the performance of the school, because even though the Reviews headlines are certainly over the top, the facts standing by themselves are embarrassing enough to ruin the reputation. If you don't like it, move to the south Bronx where no one keeps an eye on the schools and see how things turn out.

  21. Saudi Arabia is indeed a repressive hellhole. Today, for example, a Saudi woman was sentenced to be lashed 10 times with a whip for defying the kingdom's prohibition on female drivers.

  22. Marble Hill anyone??

All these comments are on other things like Stanton, Dinowitz & Saudis . . .
