NY Voter Turnout Lowest in the Nation

This article from Sam Roberts at the NY Times shows that New York ranked lower than every state in the nation in voter turnout. Despite contests for every statewide race, New York's turnout was lower than any mid-term election for at least 3 decades. Only about 32 percent of eligible New York voters went to the polls on November 2nd. This is a trend that continues to grow. The real question is what does it mean for the future?

  1. New York State should seriously consider moving up the primary date to increase voter particiapation. Prior to 1974 Primary day was held in June. Holding primary day on the 2nd Tuesday of September is a busy time for many new yorkers. Primary day competes against labor day travel, the first days of school, the beginning of the Jewish New Year, the end of Ramadan and 9/11 remembrances. Secondly, New York State needs to institute early voting. The state should allow people to cast their vote 17 to 4 days before voting day.

  2. May I also suggest same day voter registration, non-partisan Board of Elections, and revamping the ballots to be fully digital as opposed to the "scantron" fiasco. I also recommend early voting for primaries as well.
